A NEW BOOK ON CODING

An interesting new book about children's coding has been written by Dr Marina Umaschi Bers. She is director of the DevTech Research Group at Tufts University as well as codeveloper of the Scratch Jr programming app. it is interesting because oit focuses on how young children (7years and under) can engage in computational thinking and learn how to become computer programmers. Coding can be integrated into the various disciplines taught in the classroom in order to promote the acquision of literacy, mathematics, natural science using project based learning among other methodologies🌞

La Dra. Marina Umaschi Bers ha publicado un libro muy interesante sobre los niños y la programación de ordenadores. Trabaja de directora del grupo de Investigación de Desarrollo Tecnológico en la universidad de Tufts, así como de codesarrolladora de la aplicación Scratch Jr. Es interesante porque plantea su enfoque en como los niños de 7 años o menos pueden empezar a desarrollar el pensamiento computacional y aprender a programar ordenadores. 

WHAT IS / ¿QUÉ ES PLICKERS??

What is it and how it works/ Qué es y cómo funciona:

Plickers is a tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for students devices.🌞🌞 Plickers permite hacer una evaluación formativa sin necesidad de que los alumnos traigan a clase tablet/ordenador o móvil.

The students only need a piece of paper with a code (a funny square with a number and four letters), which you can print from their website. The number is assigned to that pupil, so you know how he/she is doing when answering your questions. The letters are for multiple choice answer (4 possible answers) or yes/no, true/false answers. 🌞🌞Los alumnos necesitan un papel que lleva impreso un código con un número y cuatro letras. Se imprime gratis desde la web. Se asigna un número a cada alumno, así sabes sus resultados cuando pasas el test. Las letras son para la respuesta múltiple (4 posibles respuestas) o verdadero/falso, si/no

I use it at the end of every Science unit to check the level of understanding, of reading & listening skills in English each student has, of  knowledge acquired during the unit. It shows the pupils the answers in the classroom but it doesn't tell them who answered well, who didn't. Only the teacher can see that. 🌞🌞Personalmente, lo utilizamos al final de cada unidad de Science para comprobar nivel de comprensión, además de  poner en práctica su uso del inglés leído o escuchado, de comprender fotografías y diagramas. A los alumnos les muestra las respuestas de la clase, sin indicar nombres y posteriormente les indica la respuesta correcta, pero no les dice quien ha contestado bien y quien no, eso solamente lo sabe el profesor y cada alumno sobre si mismo. Se mantiene el anonimato y de este modo, el alumno se siente más seguro a la hora de proporcionar sus respuestas al test. 

Finally, the web has a fantastic chart with results and percentage scores, individual and for the whole of the class, separated by questions, so you can see the weakest points and the topics they master. 🌞🌞Finalmente, indicar que la web tiene unas tablas fantásticas con los resultados y porcentajes obtenidos tanto a nivel individual como de grupo, separado por cada pregunta que has realizado. En esas tablas qeda reflejado también claramente que materias dominan  y cuáles son los puntos débiles que necesitan reforzar. 

Technology required/ Qué se necesita:

A mobile, tablet, or Ipad for the teacher, an interactive white board to show the questions and the class' results. The qr code printed in paper for each pupil.🌞🌞Un móvil, tablet, Ipad para el profesor para recoger los datos, una PDI para enseñar las preguntas y los resultados de la clase. El código impreso qr en papel para ada alumno. Nuestros alumnos pegan la hoja con el código en el interior de la cubierta trasera de la agenda, así se mantiene intacta, no se arruga y siempre saben dónde está.
